In the North Park 2010 season opener, Mike Giovenco struck out 12 batters while allowing only one earned run as the Vikings defeated host Atlanta Christian College, 6-3.  Angel Carrasco and Mike Domenick each hit two-run homers while Joel Bonnett worked two scoreless frames to pick up the save.

After trading scoreless first innings, North Park struck for three runs in the top of the second.  Andy Athans reached on a hit by pitch, stole second, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Zach Deutscher.  Carrasco then lifted a high fly ball to left that the Chargers’ Justin Driscoll appeared to have a bead on, but the ball just cleared the fence to put the Vikings up 3-0.

Atlanta Christian came back with an unearned run in the fourth on a single, a balk, and an error.  They got a break when Viking right fielder Devin Melecio lost a high fly ball in the darkness that went for a run-scoring triple.  A passed ball then knotted the contest at 3-3.

The Vikings regained the lead for good in the eighth, Nick Marino rifled a double to left and Trevor Popp reached on a perfect bunt.  Marino scored on a wild pitch before Domenick launched a majestic home run to left to stake North Park to a three-run lead.  Bonnett came on in relief to post his second career save, ending the game on a called third strike.

Marino led the offensive attack with a pair of doubles, the only Viking with multiple hits.  Carrasco and Domenick each had key round-trippers, while Popp, Melecio, Deutscher, Mike Sommerfield, and Brian Staatz had one hit apiece.  Giovenco was sharp on the hill, working seven strong innings, striking out 12, walking two, and giving up four hits.

The Vikings travel to Sewanee, TN, to take on the University of the South in a Sunday matinee.
