North Park picked up its second win of the season-opening weekend series with a 13-10 victory over the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. The Vikings scored in six of the first seven innings, Mike Domenick singled in Nick Marino in the first for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Zach Deutscher was hit by a pitch to lead off the second and Ryan Javech doubled. A single by Marino and a grounder off the bat of Wade Yunker put the Vikings up 3-0. The host Tigers scored an unearned run in the third off starter Jake Hollinsaid on a walk, a failed pickoff, and a balk. North Park added a run in the fourth (a single by Trevor Popp drove in Javech) and two more in the fifth (a Deutscher single and a Javech groundout drove in Yunker and Domenick). They widened the lead to 12-1 with a six-run outburst in the sixth. Domenick’s sac fly drove in Popp, and a three-run homer off the bat of Devin Melecio brought in Yunker and Andy Athans. Angel Carrasco’s two-run single capped off the rally, driving in Deutscher and Loza. In the seventh the Vikings wrapped up their scoring with an unearned run as Trevor Popp reached on an error and scored on another Tiger miscue. The momentum shifted in the bottom of the seventh when the Tigers put up six runs of their own. Reliever Pete Sparacino walked the first three batters before giving up a single. Consecutive errors by the Vikings then set the table for a big inning, and the Tigers took advantage, scoring runs on a double, two singles, and a groundout. Viking reliever Travis Boyer started the eighth with a six-run lead, but a pair of walks and a pair of singles plated three more. After Boyer allowed two base runners in the ninth, closer Joel Bonnett induced a game-ending double play to pick up his second save in as many games. Every Viking starter collected at least one hit. Leading the offensive attack were Ryan Javech (3-for-4 with three runs scored), Mike Domenick and Andy Athans (each 2-for-4), and Zach Deutscher (2-for-3). Trevor Popp stole three bases and Javech two. On the mound, Jake Hollinsaid (1-0) worked five innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits for the victory . North Park travels to Fort Myers, Florida, for a six-game set in the Gene Cusic Classic. The Vikings open against Southern Vermont College on March 6th. |
