Vikings Overpower Cards in Nightcap, 20-13

Pete Sparacino worked 6 1/3 innings for his third win, while Joel Bonnett finished up on the mound to record his third save.

Zach Deutscher (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 1 HR, 3 runs, 4 RBIs) and Trevor Popp (4-for-6, 2 runs, 4 RBIs, 1 double) paced the Vikings' 19-hit attack.

Mike Domenick, Ryan Javech, and Zach Berryman each had three-hit games.

Mike Sommerfield was 2-for-2 with a home run and four runs scored while Wade Yunker hit three sacrifice flies and reached base twice on hit by pitch.
North Park rebounded from a game one 13-5 loss to put up six multi-run innings against six Cardinal pitchers for a 20-13 win and a split of Saturday's doubleheader.

Pete Sparacino started on the mound for the Vikings and allowed one unearned run in the first.  North Park responded with a big four-run first: Wade Yunker was hit by a pitch, Mike Domenick doubled, and Ryan Javech hit a two-run single.  After Brian Staatz walked, Zach Deutscher launched a two-run double to stake Sparacino to a 4-1 lead.  The Cardinals closed to within one on a two-run homer in the second, but the Vikings countered with two of their own on a single by Mike Sommerfield, a double by Trevor Popp, a sacrifice fly by Yunker, and a groundout by Domenick.

North Central plated five in the third, due in large part to a Viking error, for a short-lived 8-6 lead.  However, the Blue and Gold came right back with three runs when Javech singled and Deutscher hit a two-run homer, then Sommerfield followed with a solo round-tripper for a 9-8 lead.  The Vikings widened the margin to 11-8 after five when Deutscher doubled, Zach Berryman singled, and Sommerfield walked to load the bases with nobody out.  A single by Popp and a sacrifice fly by Yunker pushed two runs across.

After giving up a two-run homer in the sixth, Sparacino was lifted for reliever Joel Bonnett to preserve an 11-10 lead.  The Vikings then roared back with their biggest inning of the game, scoring five times against three Cardinal pitchers: Javech hit a solo home run, Deutscher was hit by a pitch, Berryman doubled, Sommerfield walked to load the bases, Popp hit a two-run single, Yunker was hit by a pitch, and Domenick hit another two-run single.

North Park wrapped up their scoring onslaught in the seventh on an error and run-scoring singles by Staatz, Berryman, and Popp to go up 20-11.  The Cardinals managed a two-run homer in the ninth to narrow the deficit but could get no closer.

For the Vikings (12-6, 1-1), Deutscher (3-for-4, 3 runs scored, 2 doubles and a homer) and Popp (4-for-6) led the offense with four RBIs apiece, while Domenick (3-for-5, 3 RBIs, 2 doubles), Javech (3-for-4 with 4 runs scored), Berryman (3-for-6), and Sommerfield (2-for-2 with 4 runs scored) were the other Viking batters with multi-hit games.  Yunker had a sparkling small-ball game, going 0-for-1 but with three sacrifice flies and two hit by pitches.  Sparacino (3-1) worked 6 1/3 innings for the win, while Bonnett gets credited with his third save after 2 2/3 innings of two-hit relief.

North Park travels to Naperville for the rubber game of the series, scheduled for 3.00 PM on Saturday.
